The 81-member National Assembly is also directly elected for five years.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Inland from a narrow coastal plain is a series of plateau rising in the north to the Chaine du Togo, including Pic Baumann at 983 m (3225 ft). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Togo has a hot and humid tropical climate, although the north is drier.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The majority of the labor force is involved in subsistence farming, with yams and millet as the principal crops. Phosphates are the main export. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">CFA franc.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Colonized by Germany in 1884, Togoland was occupied by Franco-British forces in World War I, after which it was divided between them as trust territories. British Togoland became part of Ghana; the French section gained independence as Togo in 1960, and subsequently relations with Ghana have been strained. Togo has experienced great political instability and several coups. A multi-party system was restored in the 1990s, but civil unrest has persisted owing to continued military intervention in political life.</span></text>
